Disc filtration is a modern and efficient method of liquid purification that combines the advantages of traditional technologies with an innovative approach.

Types of filtration

There have been two main types of filtration for centuries:

  1. Surface filtration - the liquid passes through a flat mesh that retains contaminant particles on the surface.
  2. Depth filtration - the liquid is purified by passing through a volumetric medium where contaminant particles are trapped in the inner layers of the material. This method provides a higher level of purification and is used, for example, in sand or gravel backfill filters.

How does a backfill filter work?

Depth filtration in backfill filters is based on the structure of the filter media, such as sand or gravel. Thanks to the microscopic channels between the grains, contaminants are trapped inside the bed. When the filter becomes dirty, it can be flushed with water and compressed air to restore efficiency.

The main advantage of the backfill filter is the retention of contaminants in the inner layers of sand and the possibility of easy regeneration of the filter material.

Disc filters: a modern alternative

Disc filters, for example, from Azud, are a modern analogue of traditional backfill filters. Their design is also based on the principle of depth filtration, but with the use of multilayer disks with grooves. Contaminants are trapped between the disks, and the filter is cleaned by backwashing and separating the disks, which destroys the structure of the contaminated layer.

Differences between Azud disc filters and traditional backfill filters

Traditional backfill filter:

  1. Filter element: A three-dimensional grate with randomly poured sand.
  2. leaning process:

The sand is dried before cleaning.

The sand is rinsed with water to restore efficiency.

Azud disk filter:

  1. Filter element: A three-dimensional grating formed by a package of disks with complex surface topography.
  2. Cleaning process:

The disks are loosened to remove contaminants.

The discs rotate and move transversely to each other, which provides more efficient cleaning.

The key advantage of Azud disc filters:

The innovative regeneration mechanism allows for quick and efficient cleaning of the discs without the need for drying or time-consuming procedures typical of backfill filters. This makes them easier to operate and maintain.

The filter element of the disc filter consists of a block of plastic disks (1), which are the basis of the filtration process. The disks (2) are tightly pressed together, forming a multilayer structure to retain contaminant particles. This unit is placed on a special rinsing mold (3), which ensures easy cleaning.
The filter housing (8) contains the entire structure and is equipped with switching devices (9) for controlling the system and a disk release mechanism (10) that is activated during rinsing.
The filter operation is controlled by a valve (11, 12) that regulates the water flow depending on the operating mode: filtration or rinsing. To effectively swirl the flow, an impeller (4) is located on the base of the disc block, which helps to optimize the filtration process

Basic principles of operation of disk filters with Helix technology

Design of the filter element

  • The filter element consists of plastic disks, the surface of which is equipped with micro grooves of variable depth. The grooves form a complex three-dimensional structure that provides a high level of filtration:
  • Two-level filtration: Contaminant particles remain both on the surface of the discs and in the maze of grooves.
  • The geometry of the discs:

MG: triangular grooves with an effective area of 224 cm².

W: three-dimensional grid with “pockets” for particle retention, 369 cm².

Rinsing modes

The filters provide automatic cleaning that can be started

- by timer

- by pressure drop;

- manually.

Rinsing water is supplied through nozzles located in the inner part of the housing, which allows the discs to rotate and move transversely for effective cleaning.

Innovative Helix technology

An impeller located at the base of the filter adjusts the water flow, preventing large particles from settling on the surface of the discs. Thanks to this:

- increases the dirt capacity of the filter;

- the interval between washing is extended;

- water consumption for cleaning is reduced;

- Improves the overall quality of filtration.

Advantages of the system

1.Cost-effectiveness: low water consumption and reduced maintenance frequency.

2.Efficiency: retention of even small particles due to the complex structure of the grooves.

3.Reliability: stable operation even with heavily contaminated water.

4.Flexibility in use: suitable for a variety of applications - from agriculture to industrial systems.

This technology allows for high-quality filtration at minimal operating costs.
